The pedometer is a handy feature that can be found on sports watches such as Timex and Casio. It allows you to calculate the steps you have taken, and thus the daily assessment of your physical activity.

It works by using GPS signals to determine your position, speed and distance travelled, but it can also be used to calculate your heart rate, blood pressure, pulse speed, temperature and sleep patterns.

For the first time ever, researchers from the National Centre for Scientific Research and the European Commission have produced an interactive digital chart of the entire human body using a wearable technology – an e-body. The European Commission has released a digital interactive chart of the entire human body using a wearable technology.

‘The e-body technology allows people to monitor their own body mass, body fat, waist size, heart rate, blood pressure and sleep patterns over an extended period of time,’ said a spokeswoman, who wished to remain anonymous.

‘The technology can be used by any person as a way of improving physical functioning, particularly as it can monitor heart rate and blood pressure over long periods of time.’ An interactive electronic chart was created of more than 500 individuals by scientists at the Centre for Digital Health Research in the European Commission’s (EC) Department for Digital, Consumer Affairs and European Economic and Social Research (EDCER).

‘The data was collected over a period of nine years and shows how people’s daily activities impact on the body’s overall health and well-being,’ said a press release from ECDCER. The researchers say the system could be used to help people understand the impact of diet and exercise and help them find the right lifestyle for their own body.

The team hope the study has the potential to be helpful to healthcare practitioners, as it shows how different lifestyle choices lead to differing body profiles but it may also benefit patients who need to monitor the health of their own body. The study was led by Dr. Jan-Bert Van de Ven at the ECDCER as a project between the two institutions. It was funded by ECDCER and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Investigation (ONS).

The study is to be published in a peer-reviewed journal in the fall and a subsequent version published online.
