1 review for Sony KD-77AG9

  1. RICH PRO

I have had KD-65AG9 for 3 months and I will write a few words of impressions from use. At the outset, I would like to add that I do not deal with photography professionally, but I pay a lot of attention to image quality and color reproduction. It was the main reason I bought a SONY model.

Let me start with the appearance – a minimalist, thin frame, a thin and elegant stand. This is exactly what a premium TV should look like. It is very thin and lighter than the previous 40 ”LCD from SONY. Unfortunately, the downside is the glossy screen that reflects everything. When the image is bright, there is no problem, but when it is dark, it bothers with poorly adjusted lamps in the room. The old Sony TV model didn’t reflect that much light.

Before buying, I read the instructions, where it says not to put it in a recess and if you want to hang it on the wall, you should give it 30 cm. space above. I do not know why, because this TV does not get too warm at all, but I did not hang it on the wall, but it stands on the cupboard.

As for the image quality, a lot has been said about it and there is really nothing to discuss here. The image is sensational, natural, sensational colors, including skin, no distortions, stains, burned pixels. It looks perfect. I did not calibrate it with a professional calibrator, but honestly, I do not feel such a need. There are many color options in the TV menu. The SD channels look exceptionally good on it, the HD image is perfect, but when we provide it with a 4K HDR signal, the jaw drops.

The TV has a lot of image settings and the image processor does an amazing job. In the previous model I turned off most of the “improvement” effects, and here I use a few functions and they work quite nicely. I was impressed by the option of “liquefying” the image. I watch a movie from the 1930s and instead of the characteristic “frame rate” – the image is smooth, as if shot with a 60 fps camera. This also works when watching cinema movies, 24p suddenly looks like 60p and the movie looks more like a document than a cinematic image. Of course, in some cases it looks great and in others less and in the case of very fast scenes you can see how the processor goes silly, but the effect made a big impression on me. In addition, there are options for increasing image sharpness and resolution. The sound from the TV itself was very good.

Android TV works quite well, there are many applications, HBO GO, Netflix calibrated professionally, Player, Onet, TVP and a lot of other applications. There is a lot more to it than on Apple TV, but I only use Netflix and HBO Go, and in those 3 months Netflix stuck “only” once. The bluetooth was also jammed once and I had to restart the TV.

SONY promised a new version of Android TV at the end of 2019, but I haven’t got it until today. Dolby Atomos support does not work. There is no cooperation with Apple hardware – no Airplay 2. I specially paid more for the 2019 model only for the above options, and so far they are not.

The TV works perfectly with Sony PS4 PRO or Apple TV, but to get full picture quality in 4K, you have to go deep into the menu and switch the option in HDMI. It took me a long time to figure it out because it was not so obvious. There was a message on the console that this TV allows you to get a better picture, change the TV settings. In my opinion, a premium TV set should switch this option itself when it recognizes equipment using 4K, and even more so equipment from SONY. On the other hand, the image from Apple TV or PS4 PRO games looks simply insane. Image from NC + also.

To sum up, it is a TV that costs money and is not without flaws, but I think that it is really amazing equipment. Watching movies and programs has gained a new dimension and a new quality. Realism, detail, natural colors and black is just black (at first I had to get used to it). There is currently nothing better than OLED and SONY has never let me down when it comes to image quality (LED or even QLED is not the league)
