Token
A token is the smallest chunk of text an AI model works with – often about four characters or ~0.75 of an English word. “Smartphone” might be one or two tokens; a whole sentence could be twenty or thirty.
Models think, count costs and measure speed in tokens, not words. That is why you will see units like tokens per second (speed) or a context window measured in tokens (how much text fits at once).
